BarCamp Nashville Survival Guide

BarCamp Nashville 2013 is only days away - November 2 – and will be at a secret, special venue. Doors open at 8 a.m. with morning voting lasting from 8 – 9:15 a.m. A plenary session will be held at 9:15 a.m. with the first regular sessions starting at 9:45 a.m.

We thought you might have some questions so we prepared this guide to provide information and useful tips to make full use of your All Access Pass.

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PREPARE FOR BARCAMP?

First, create a profile and indicate your favorite sessions. Once you have a profile, you can click on the venue map for this year’s location and directions. If you pre-registered and picked sessions, a customized session set will be created under your profile once the voting results are published.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING OR DO DAY OF?

  • Bring money for possibly purchasing food offsite (if registered after October 28 deadline) and drinks. Credit cards will be accepted. Any unclaimed lunch tickets will be released at lunchtime.
  • Don’t forget to grab your fully charged smartphones and other electronic devices for VOTING, tweeting, texting and blogging. We’ll have charging stations but can’t guarantee availability.
  • Bring lots of business cards to hand out. You’ll be meeting lots of people.
  • A small notebook will be a nice alternative for note taking if you’re not a fast typist.
  • Wear COMFORTABLE shoes. Some extra popular sessions may be standing room only.

This year you won’t have to fret about finding and paying for parking. Plenty of free parking will be available.

CREATING THE DAY’S SET LIST

The doors open at 8 a.m. for late registration, check-in, coffee and early networking. Also, t-shirts and swag bags will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.

Session selection this year will be done via a web app created at HackNashville. Each registered attendee will be given four votes for the morning sessions and four votes for the afternoon sessions. Details will be provided when you check in. In case of technological problems, we will implement an analog voting plan.

Voting for the morning sessions is from 8 - 9:15 a.m. The plenary session starts at 9:15 a.m. in the Green Room. Morning sessions begin at 9:45 a.m. Afternoon voting is from 12:10 – 1:30 p.m. with sessions starting at 2 p.m.

Results will be published at 9:35 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. You can check your profile if you selected favorites for your customized BarCamp Nashville set. Results will also be distributed on social media, outside session rooms, on our website and on FireSigns.

SESSION DETAILS

Sessions are 35 minutes long with a 10-minute break between each. If you want to switch sessions for any reasons, follow the “law of two feet.” It’s not rude to leave; it’s your experience. Take full advantage of the BarCamp format to actively participate and meet like-minded people.

YOUR CREW LUNCH PASS

If you selected your food choice by the October 28 deadline, your free lunch will be available in the Green Room. Lunch will be served from 12:35 – 1:45 p.m. Unclaimed lunch tickets will be released at lunchtime. Otherwise, you will need to bring your own lunch or purchase one at a (not so) nearby location.

TAKE BREAKS

You’ll be learning a ton of great stuff and meeting all kinds of people. Take a moment to let everything soak in. But don’t take too long. You don’t want to miss anything.

BE PREPARED TO MEET PEOPLE

Be prepared to talk about yourself and ask others about themselves. You will be amazed at the variety of people you will meet and friends you will make. Don’t forget to bring plenty of business cards. If you hear an interesting conversation, don’t feel too shy to jump in. Introduce your friends to the people you meet.

WHERE’S THE AFTER PARTY?

The After Party starts at 5 p.m. Hang out with the rest of the BarCamp groupies in the Green Room enjoying free Yazoo beer and the Geek Jam band and purchase culinary delights from food trucks outside.

Got all that? Most importantly, have fun, everyone! We look forward to seeing you there!
