BarCamp Survival Guide

BarCamp Nashville 2016 is only days away on Saturday, October 15. Doors open at the BowTruss Building, 1001 Third Avenue North, at 8 a.m. with morning voting from 8:00-9:15 a.m. A general session will be held at 9:15 a.m. with the first regular sessions starting at 9:45 a.m.

 

We know you have questions, so we prepared this guide chock full of information and useful tips. It's what you make it—so plan ahead to make the most of your BarCamp experience.

 

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR BARCAMP?

First, create a profile and indicate your favorite sessions. Once your profile is all set, check out our guide to the location for directions and a map to parking. If you pre-registered and picked sessions, a customized schedule of your favorite sessions will be created under your profile once the voting results are published.

 

WHAT SHOULD I BRING OR DO ON SATURDAY?

  • Charge your devices before your arrive for VOTING, tweeting, texting and blogging. We’ll have charging stations, but we can’t guarantee availability.

  • Bring lots of business cards to hand out. You’ll be needing them for all of the fascinating people you're going to meet.

  • Remember a small notebook as a handy alternative for note-taking if you’re not a fast typist, or in an emergency if your device dies in the middle of a session.

  • Wear COMFORTABLE shoes. Some extra popular sessions may be standing room only.

 

Parking is somewhat limited, so please try to rideshare, bike or take the bus. Free parking will be available in multiple lots near the building. View the parking map to plan your route to the event accordingly. Enter the building from the entrance off the BACK parking lot. (Please note: This is a change from 2015.)

 

ARRIVAL AND VOTING

The doors open at 8:00 am for late registration, check-in, coffee and early networking. Swag bags and t-shirts and swag bags will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.

 

Session selection this year will be done via a web app. Each registered attendee will be given four votes for the morning sessions and four votes for the afternoon sessions. Details will be provided when you check in. In case of unforeseen technical problems, we will implement an analog voting plan.

Voting for the morning sessions is from 8:00-9:15 a.m. The plenary session starts at 9:15 a.m. followed by morning sessions begin at 9:45 a.m. Afternoon voting will be from noon - 12:45 p.m., with sessions starting at 1:15 p.m.

 

Voting results will be published at 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. If you selected favorites, you can view sessions you have favorited from your profile under the “My Sessions” tab for your customized bcnX session schedule. Results will also be distributed on social media, outside session rooms and on our website.

 

SESSION DETAILS

Sessions are 35 minutes long with 10-minute breaks in between. If you want to switch sessions for any reasons, follow the “law of two feet.” If you’re in a session and it’s not what you thought it would be, or there are two sessions happening simultaneously and you want to catch a little bit of each, simply get up quietly and walk out. It isn't rude—in fact, it’s encouraged. It’s your event—make it the most valuable experience for you.

 

THERE IS SUCH A THING AS FREE LUNCH

Lunch is self-service and we be set up in the main hallway near the registration entrance from 11:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. or while supplies last. This year we will have boxed lunches. Options include smoked turkey, honey ham and roast beef. There are also gluten free and vegan options available!

 

TAKE BREAKS!

You’ll be learning a ton of great stuff and meeting all kinds of people. Take a moment to let everything soak in. But don’t take too long—you don’t want to miss anything. Everyone will have the opportunity to unwind at the end of the day during the After Party.

 

BE PREPARED TO MEET PEOPLE

Be prepared to talk about yourself and ask others about themselves. You will be amazed at the variety of people you will meet and friends you will make. Don’t forget to bring plenty of business cards. If you hear an interesting conversation, don’t feel too shy to jump in. Introduce your friends to the people you meet.

WHERE’S THE AFTER PARTY?

The After Party starts at 4:30 p.m. outside the main entrance (weather permitting). Swap stories of your favorite sessions and continue making new connections while enjoying a taco bar and margaritas from Chago’s Cantina and craft beer from Yazoo.
